James’ cover is to pretend to be an aid to the Ambassador to France, and to keep his cover, James enjoys an elegant lifestyle with a beautiful French fiancée and a busy social is soon assigned to work with Charlie Wax, played by Travolta, to help him learn more about the CIA and to get a promotion. Wax is in Paris on assignment to investigate drug dealers that may have had a role in the death of a family member of the Secretary of Defense. The two men investigate the dealers and find that they are financed by a group of terrorists from Pakistan. The agents find that the dealers bad acts go beyond the overdose death of the family member and they have bigger goals. The terrorists are planning on blowing up the Embassy where James works. When the two agents discover the terrorist hideout, there are pictures of James on the two agents also discover the James’ fiancée, Caroline, is a double agent and is working for the terrorists. When James confronts her, she shoots him and escapes out the window. Caroline then attempts to drive a car into a government motorcade to assassinate the Ambassador. She is wearing an explosive vest. Wax blows up her car with a rocket launcher but she escapes injury. James then catches her and tries to persuade her to abandon her murderous ways. She ignores him and James is forced to kill her. The mission complete, Wax decides to leave France. He is so impressed with James’ performance that he asks him to be his partner, promoting him to a full-time CIA operative. Man muss nun wahrlich kein gewiefter Psychologe sein, um darin einen Akt der Kompensation zu erkennen. Ähnlich wie dem Schriftsteller ergeht es in Pierre Morels From Paris with Love dem Botschaftssekretär James Reese (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers), der mit zunehmender Langeweile seinen Dienst an der US-Vertretung in Paris versieht. Zwar darf er dann und wann unspektakuläre Handlangerdienste für die CIA ausführen, doch dort, wo es wirklich zur Sache geht, erledigen andere die schmutzigen Jobs, während er Abend für Abend nach Hause in die traute Zweisamkeit mit seiner französischen Freundin Caroline (Kasia Smutniak) eilt. Just an einem jener Abende ereilt ihn dann doch das Schicksal, auf das er immer gehofft hat. Und zwar in Gestalt des ordinären, lauten und tollkühnen US-Agenten Charlie Wax (John Travolta mit Glatze), den er zunächst aus den Verhörräumen des französischen Zolls befreien muss. Was anfangs wie ein reiner Routinejob aussieht, entpuppt sich schnell als ein blutiges Unternehmen. Denn Wax ist in einer heiklen Mission unterwegs und gehört zu jener Sorte Agenten, die erst schießen und dann fragen – falls er letztere Option überhaupt ernsthaft in Betracht zieht. Und so stolpert Reese anfangs wie ein Trottel mit einer riesigen Chinavase durch seine Heimatstadt, um an der Seite von Wax endlich all die Abenteuer zu erleben, von denen er vorher stets nur geträumt hat. Da die schmutzige Affäre bald schon auch Auswirkungen ungeahnter Art auf sein Privatleben hat, wird das Ganze schnell zu einem Alptraum voller Blut und Blei… Man ahnt es schnell: Freunde ausgeklüglter Plots, trickreicher Wendungen und tiefschürfender Charakterstudien über melancholische Botschaftssekretäre und zweifelnde CIA-Agenten sind hier vollkommen fehl am Platz. Stattdessen erweisen sich Pierre Morel und sein Produzent Luc Besson nicht gerade als Kinder von Traurigkeit, ähnlich wie Charlie Wax gehen sie sprichwörtlich über Leichen und zeigen ihren laxen Landsleuten wieder einmal, wie man im Sumpf von Drogendealern und gemeingefährlichen Islamisten ohne Gnade aufräumt. Rasant inszeniert und mit reichlich Schießereien und Verfolgungsjagden ausgestattet ist Form Paris with Love ein politisch ziemlich unkorrekter Actionfilm aus der B-Liga, über dessen grobe Welteinteilung man besser nicht allzu viel nachdenkt. Zumal der Film dem Zuschauer dazu sowieso recht wenig Zeit lässt. Nach Pierre Morels 96 Hours, in dem Liam Neeson auf ganz ähnliche Weise durch Paris hetzte, um seine Tochter aus den Händen eines Mädchenhändlerringes zu befreien, ist From Paris with Love ein gleichartig gestrickter Film geworden, der sich zwar einen politischen Überbau (natürlich der „war on terror“) gibt, der sich aber letzten Endes nur als Begründung für noch mehr Action und Gewalt herausstellt. Lediglich auf das in amerikanischen Filmen ähnlichen Zuschnitts übliche Pathos muss man bei Morels No-Brainer verzichten. Wobei man das ehrlich gesagt noch am wenigsten vermisst in diesem bemerkenswert ungestümen und sinnfreien Action-Knaller aus Frankreich.
